ANGLICARE receives $1.65 million for a Dementia Day Centre in the Illawarra
ANGLICARE Sydney has received $1.65 million in funding to rebuild a dementia specific day centre at Mt Ousley in the Illawarra.
Funding for the project is jointly provided through Home and Community Care by the Commonwealth and NSW Governments.
Director of ANGLICARE’s aged care division, known as Chesalon Living, Mr Rob Evers, said the funding was good news for the Illawarra, “as it will allow us to expand the range of services we can provide to people with different levels of dementia”.
“The new facility will allow the focus to be on helping people retain their living skills and personal interests, with a kitchen and garden that can be used and enjoyed by the day centre clients.
“The redesign will also incorporate more than one space for group activities which will mean people with different levels of dementia can enjoy different activities. In the past we haven’t been able to do this and so our capacity will certainly grow.”
Mr Evers said one of the most important aspects of responding to those with dementiarelated memory loss is to “beat the social isolation that can result for those with dementia and their carers”.
“Carers receive a wonderful benefit – both through access to respite and through the opportunity to form social connections with other carers.”
