Caring to run for ANGLICARE

Macarthur Anglican School Year 11 student Gareth Mumby is in training for a run that he hopes will make a difference to many lives. Having started running at the age of five, Gareth began running competitively from the time he was thirteen. He has represented both NSW and Australia in competitive events and runs up to 60km a week whilst in training. He has always wanted to run from his home in Picton to Macarthur Anglican School in Cobbitty in order to raise money for local charities. “I have always wanted to do this,” the 16 year old said, “but I have chosen to do it now because I was too young to run so far earlier and I will be busy with Year 12 next year.”

On the 20th September 2010, Gareth will set out from his home in Picton and run the 30km to school. In doing so he is hoping to raise over $10 000 to support ANGLICARE’s counselling services in Campbelltown and Westmead Children’s Hospital. He is hoping to complete the run in less than 3 hours.

Macarthur Anglican School have been a long-time supporter of the work of ANGLICARE and Gareth’s run will build upon this foundation and raise greater awareness of the work of ANGLICARE in the Macarthur region. The money raised by Gareth will go towards helping teens, children and families who are facing difficult times.

“It is fantastic to see Gareth raising money to help make a real difference in the lives of other young people in his community. We hope that Gareth’s example will inspire others to see that they can have an impact on the community around them,” said Kate Ross, ANGLICARE’s School Coordinator.

What is Gareth’s advice to other’s thinking of doing something similar? “Get fit! Because 30km is a long way!”
