Churches splash and dash for ANGLICARE

St Michael’s Cathedral Wollongong, Figtree Anglican, St Marks West Wollongong and Shellharbour City Anglican are four churches that have contributed runners and swimmers from their pews to raise funds for ANGLICARE in the Illawarra this year.

Participating in the annual Illawarra Aquathon, these dedicated teams will be putting on their swimmers and running shoes to represent their local churches to support people in crisis and to help families at risk stay together and build healthy and sustainable relationships.

According to Andrew Stratford, regional manager at ANGLICARE Wollongong, support from churches has been the highest it has ever been this year.

“We have nineteen registered participants supporting ANGLICARE this year and most of them are associated with churches in the Illawarra,” Andrew explains.

“We would like to thank them for their bravery, enthusiasm and willingness to partner with ANGLICARE in this way.”

Peter Hutchinson, Senior Minister at St Mark’s Anglican Church West Wollongong, will be one of the 2000 competitors on the day and is keen to support ANGLICARE and its work.

“I’m not really a fitness freak but I thought running in the Aquathon was a way in which we could support ANGLICARE. Our team is called “Cough up for ANGLICARE” and I’ll probably cough something up as I run!” jokes Peter.

Highlighting the nature of the programs that support the marginalised and disadvantaged in the Illawarra, Peter says “The work ANGLICARE does is terrific. Not just in a crisis, but in the more long term, intensive work they do with people that help them get their lives back together in a holistic way.

“This is the second year we’ve supported ANGLICARE in the Aquathon and we’re keen to support an organisation that is doing such great work. It is a great way to connect with the community to raise awareness of ANGLICARE and it’s also a good way for us individuals to give something back to the community.”
