Local school girls give their treasured clothes to the needy
Students from SCEGGS Darlinghurst recently raided their wardrobes and collected masses of clothing for those who don’t have warm clothes this winter.
The primary school house of ‘Beck’ decided to organise the clothing drive, distribute collection bags and donate all of the clothing to ANGLICARE - Sydney.
A year six student and member of the ‘Beck’ organising committee, said the drive was a huge success and very enjoyable.
“Everyone brought in so much stuff. It was lots of fun organising it and it showed the warmth of the SCEGGS community” she said.
More than two hundred bags of quality clothing and warm blankets were collected by the school and are to be donated to ANGLICARE for distribution on Tuesday 10 June.
SCEGGS School Chaplain, Garry Lee-Lindsay, said the small charitable act helped the girls to realise how fortunate they are and how they can always help the community.
“Being situated in Eastern Sydney we are often confronted by the tragedy of homelessness and the needs of those living on the streets” he said.
“Our students are fully aware of how blessed their lives are and that is why the girls organised the clothing drive – so they can give back to our community and help the poor and needy.”
SCEGGS students are extremely excited about the results of the clothing drive, but more than anything the girls realise the importance of generosity and compassion.
“I feel generous, satisfied and proud to know that I was doing good works for other people” a year six student said.
“It put a smile on my face that my clothes weren’t going to waste” she said.
The SCEGGS School community also makes and delivers food to people living on the streets, raises money for local refugees and gives assistance to the elderly.
The clothing drive coincides with ANGLICARE’s Annual Winter Appeal. To donate money, food or clothes and help make a difference in the lives of those who are struggling, please contact 13 26 22 or go to ANGLICARE’s website www.anglicare.org.au.
