New Care Centre opens in Mt. Druitt
Mt Druitt residents will have better access to community services
with the new ANGLICARE Community Care Centre which officially opened on Tuesday 19 May.
With more than 45 per cent of the population in blue collar jobs and close to 40 per cent in rental properties, Mt Druitt has been highlighted by a recent study as one of the areas most vulnerable to a contraction in the national economy.
Alice Wheatley, manager of the newly relocated Community Care Centre says things were tough before the meltdown, and things have only become more challenging.
“The demand for emergency relief from people walking in off the streets has more than doubled since we moved to here,” says Alice.
“The new centre will hopefully provide the infrastructure necessary to cope with this increase and enable us to assist more people in the Mt Druitt community.”
Other than meeting the demand for emergency relief, the move has already made a positive impact on family relationships programs, provided accommodation for a new Indigenous Parenting Support Service and supports ANGLICARE's many disability services for the Cumberland/Prospect region.
“One playgroup for the Islander community in Mt Druitt has just exceeded expectations. The new location means we are more accessible to people who would like to take advantage of our services but had previously found it difficult to get to Rooty Hill.
“We were also able to provide our premises for a parenting expo that reached out to about two hundred parents and children from Mt Druitt,” says Alice.
“We are looking forward to working closely with other community partners in this way to assist people living in this area.”
