The opening of a new mental health program this week will see ANGLICARE and St John’s Anglican Church play a greater role in caring for the Maroubra community.
In partnership with ANGLICARE, the Personal Helpers and Mentors (PHaMs) program at St John’s Anglican Church will provide support for those struggling with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other mental health issues.
The debilitating effects of mental illness according to ANGLICARE Community Care manager, Jill Wrathall, can sometimes be extensive and long lasting.
“In some cases it has stood in the way of education, employment, stability and happy relationships,” says Ms Wrathall.
“Through help with the basic day to day things like the shopping and housekeeping, this program encourages participants to make small steps towards their own recovery.”
Recognising that people with mental illness can often feel isolated and disconnected from the community in which they live, PHaMs aims to rebuild relationships and activities that bring enjoyment back to the individual.
According to Jim Crosweller, minister at St John’s Anglican Church, it was this opportunity to care for others that drew him to the partnership with ANGLICARE.
“People who are mentally unwell are our neighbours – in our streets, workplaces, and our church. We value that ANGLICARE is able to work in this field and are excited to join in with them,” says Mr Crosweller.
“It is our aim to grow in our understanding of mental illness, and that we will enrich the PHaMs team with various kinds of support as we are able. To date this means sharing in renovating the space for the team, and hosting the launch. We hope to find connections with the team over cuppas and the bible in time, as well as with program participants.”
PHaMs is funded by the Federal Department of Families and Housing, Community Service and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
