New report tackles GFC

ANGLICARE today launched its State of the Family 2009 report to coincide with Anti-Poverty Week.

"State of the Family 2009, Beyond Economics – families at the forefront, is a detailed analysis of the scope and consequences of the global financial crisis in relation to ordinary Australians," said Dr Ian Jackson of ANGLICARE Sydney.

"It takes into account every facet of life: from work, to our personal relationships, our ability to parent, our hopes and plans for the future as well as the resilience to face further challenges as they arise."

Dr Jackson said the report, launched by Thérèse Rein in Canberra today, issues three challenges to the Federal government and to business:

Identifying social exclusion and child protection as 'wicked problems', it also offers solutions and initiatives.

"A wicked problem is one that is difficult to define, complex and continually evolving," says Dr Ian Jackson, Acting CEO of ANGLICARE Sydney.

"It's a helpful concept because it compels us to look beyond band-aid solutions and provide room to address issues that accompany the problem of poverty: such as social isolation, mental illness, relationship difficulties, housing instability, developing living skills and opening pathways into employment," he said.
