NSW Budget offers hope to those on the margins

ANGLICARE Sydney today welcomed additional funding in the NSW Budget for vital services supporting the elderly, children at risk, people with a disability and those that care for them.

“It is encouraging to see that within twelve months of an election, that the government has still felt it is able to demonstrate a commitment to some of the most vulnerable people in NSW”, said ANGLICARE Sydney CEO Peter Kell.

“Increased funding for Home and Community Care for the elderly, child protection and early intervention programs for children at risk and Out of Home Care is all very welcome, as is an increased commitment to provide support and respite to people with a disability and those that care for them.

“For too long carers have been neglected by successive governments in the vital role that they perform in our community. This increased focus on providing support services will go some way to relieving the immense burden they carry and adding weight to the words of the recently passed Carers Recognition Bill.

“However, it is unlikely that any of these initiatives would have been funded if the government had not listened to the concerns of carers and those on the margins of society in NSW.

“If the dollar figures announced today are going to make a real and lasting impact, the government will need to continue listening to the elderly, young people at risk, those with a disability and their carers as well as the many community service organisations that work along side them every day.”
