Rewarding Inner West mums who can’t stop caring

Although Mother’s Day has been and gone, mums involved with ANGLICARE Ashfield’s Support Coordination Program have a little surprise still on the way. On Wednesday May 21, the mums who are apart of the program will be treated to a beautiful floral design class, as a way of saying thank you for all the care they give.

The Support Coordination Program provides information and assistance to older parents aged sixty five years and above, who have an adult son or daughter with a disability living with them. The program is based in Ashfield and covers the entire Inner West region.

Marianne Wilcox, Coordinator of the Support Coordination Program, says the program provides the mums with essential encouragement and support.

“It becomes harder and harder for a parent to look after their child with a disability when they themselves are ageing. We really try to equip the parents with various skills and support networks to promote social skills and independent living for their son or daughter” she said.

“We understand that these wonderful mums want to care for their children for as long as is realistically possible and we want to help honour their wish.”

The floristry class is offered as a belated Mother’s Day gift from the ANGLICARE service. The mums will take part in a two hour course where they will learn to create beautiful floral arrangements at the Japanese Yuga Floral Design and Café in Glebe.

Yuga floral designs believe flowers bring happiness and heal the soul and Marianne Wilcox feels that surrounding the mums with beautiful flowers is a great recipe for joy and relaxation.

“Hopefully this class will explore hidden creative talents, whilst also providing some much needed time out from their full time role as both a mother and carer for their disabled child………. We really hope the mothers have a ‘blossoming’ time!”

Anyone is welcome to make a referral, including healthcare professionals, carers and family members.
