Singing for their Supper
A group of talented singers and musicians ‘sang for their suppers’ On Saturday 6 December at St. Thomas’ North Sydney in support of ANGLICARE’s Christmas Appeal.
However, event organiser and St Thomas’ member Sophia Mitchell made sure the suppers they sang for went to the city’s needy.
Over $1300 was raised through ticket sales and donations for ANGLICARE’s Christmas Appeal. Ms Mitchell says it is especially important to help ANGLICARE this Christmas.
“The ANGLICARE Christmas Appeal is supporting people in spiritual and financial need, especially with the current economic crisis, people really need this support at Christmas time”.
After the operatic fundraiser for ANGLICARE, audience members indicated their eagerness for more concerts in the future.
“A lot of people said they were quite surprised at how good [the performance] was because it was only $20. They said that if we ran it again next year, they would invite many more friends along.”
Ms Mitchell says all the performers on the evening were professional and semi-professional opera singers.
“I know them from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music – most of us are graduates or working professionally now,” Ms Mitchell said.
The musicians provided their services free of charge, along with the MC, sound technician, venue hire, graphic designer and marketer.
Ms Mitchell says the idea for a fundraiser based on opera singing came from her desire to use her musical gifts for the benefit of others.
“Another girl and I had been talking for some time about using our talents of singing to do some good. We decided to run a concert and because I go to an Anglican church, we chose the ANGLICARE Christmas Appeal as our charity.”
