Support, not just recognition for carers

ANGLICARE Sydney has today urged the Federal Government to back up its words with real action following the introduction into parliament yesterday of the National Carers Recognition Bill.

ANGLICARE Sydney CEO Peter Kell says the bill presents a welcome

and positive beginning, but needs to be backed up with action.

“It is very important that the role of carers is fully recognised by government agencies and the wider community, and the Statement for Australia’s Carers is a very welcome development.

“However it is one thing to build in an obligation for government agencies to be aware of the Statement and reflect its principles and another altogether to provide the actual support that carers need to undertake their vital role.”

With many programs that deal daily with the needs of carers, Mr Kell says that ANGLICARE Sydney is only all too aware of the needs of carers.

“The needs of carers are complex and require a careful and individualised approach to ensure that the dignity, respect, wellbeing and social inclusion that the Statement aspires to can realistically be achieved.

“We look forward to seeing how the Statement will be translated into real and sustainable outcomes for Australia’s carers.”

With a vision of ‘Lives changing and communities growing by care through Jesus Christ’, ANGLICARE Sydney is one of Australia’s largest community care organisations operating more than 150 programs throughout Sydney, the Illawarra and the South Coast.
