ANGLICARE Sydney Submission to the Pension Review

ANGLICARE Sydney has made a submission to the Federal Government's Pension Review. ANGLICARE's submission presents evidence of hardship among people on pensions, including case studies from ANGLICARE's frontline staff and statistical evidence gathered by ANGLICARE.

In short, ANGLICARE's submission advocates raising the base rate of the age pension, carer payment and disability support pension, along with an expansion of the system of bonus payments.  It proposes a more integrated approach in relation to carers and greater recognition of the valuable role that carers play. In relation to seniors and people with disabilities, the submission recommends that in setting the level of the pension, the Government have regard to significant medical and health costs associated with disability and old age. The submission recommends a review of other forms of income support in the light of evidence presented in the submission.

A report on the Pension Review will be provided to the Treasurer the Hon Wayne Swan and Minister the Hon Jenny Macklin in February 2009.
