Disaster Recovery

Stronger together

Floods, storms and fires have become part of the season of life in Australia. Major emergencies provide opportunities for Christians to respond with compassion; touching the lives of those affected, with love and care, in Christ's name.
ANGLICARE Disaster Recovery is working together as a community partner to provide an effective and co-ordinated response in Disaster Recovery when major emergencies occur. In partnership with the Anglican community, ANGLICARE’s Disaster Recovery is providing recovery services caring for individuals and communities affected by major emergencies, including bushfires, floods, storms, drought and unexpected high-impact incidents.
Working under the direction of NSW Department of Community Services and alongside Community Partners (Red Cross, Salvos, ADRAcare, and St Vincent de Pauls) ANGLICARE is working together to offer recovery services to people and communities affected.

Working alongside Churches both clergy and parishioners, the involvement of local parishes provides practical support, hope and encouragement to those affected by disaster.

"What is even of further encouragement to me and to our church is that a door, a wide door, of ministry opportunities has been opened into the community because of our involvement under the banner of ANGLICARE. I am very grateful, the whole team is, for the training and authorization we received less than 8 months prior by completing the one-day [Disaster Recovery] Course. God knew what was ahead and I am relieved that we picked up on the opportunity to be trained. We now look back on the training as essential, if not compulsory ministry training for an area such as our own.”

 Rev Trevor Young, Helensburgh

“As a clergy person, being part of the ANGLICARE [Disaster Recovery] Team is not an option, it’s at the very heart of the ministry of grace we’ve been called to. Visiting folk who have lost everything in the Sussex Inlet fires was not exactly easing into the job, yet subsequent visiting highlighted how important personal touch is after such a devastating event. How valuable for people to have a visit and be allowed to talk. How precious for the Anglican Church to be part of the Recovery Process.”

Well prepared to act

ANGLICARE’s aim is to enhance our gospel ministry and practical effectiveness, by being well prepared to act when required. Disaster Recovery is strengthening our ministry capacity through training, equipping and resourcing our teams of people able to serve.
Our Disaster Recovery teams consist of local groups of trained volunteers, who play a vital role in delivering care and assistance to those affected by disasters. One-day workshops provide an understanding of emergency management arrangements, disaster recovery and the role of these teams in providing support. Interested in getting some training and joining a team? Click here to see our Sydney training schedule or email  for training in regional NSW.
We are producing contemporary, up to date resources for all DR volunteers, including a training manual containing training, reference and resource material heightening the understanding of emergency management, and human needs during a disaster. These resources are intended to be utilised by all DR volunteers (leaders and members) as part of the DR uniform.
To join the team, organise a workshop for your parish, find out when a workshop is being held in your area, or to speak with a Disaster Recovery coordinator please contact us by email
