Small and Emerging Communities Program

This Settlement Grants Program provides community development services and training to small, newly arrived communities throughout the Sydney metropolitan area. This service is funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

This program works with leaders, elders, recognised stakeholders and workers within small and emerging communities. It also works with workers from mainstream and other organisations offering (or wanting to offer) services or activities to members of small and emerging communities within Sydney.

Some of the activities include the following.

For communities

• Distributes information to communities to assist in their settlement and participation in society.
• Assists in developing contacts with services, other organisations and decision makers.
• Assists communities to develope their capacity through:
- developing their infrastructure
- applying for funding
- developing and managing projects
- resources and activities
- accessing training to assist in managing their organisation
• Advocates on behalf of target communities with service providers and decision makers.
• Works in partnership with other organisations to provide projects and services required by target communities.
• Facilitates the Ethnic Minorities Actions Group (EMAG), a network of small and emerging communities within Sydney.
• Supervises ANGLICARE’s Southern Sudanese • project.

For mainstream services and workers

• Provides information and consultation in rela¬tion to target communities and their needs to assist in service provision.
• Connects services with communities.
• Facilitates meetings for workers involved with target communities.
• Assists workers to build their capacity though mentoring, support, advisory committees and provision of information.
