Did you know that there are a number of school-aged children needing long-term foster care placements?
Children like Penelope, who is 8 years old. Penelope has 2 sisters who are also in foster care, who she sees regularly. Penelope is a lively, active and imaginative child who can be very open and affectionate. Before she entered care, she didn’t attend school much, so she is significantly behind in her learning and requires additional support from her carers with her schoolwork. She can struggle to focus on tasks, and she will need some speech therapy and counselling to assist her.
Penelope can sometimes feel overwhelmed. At times when she finds it hard to manage big feelings she might run away, tune out or be cruel or careless towards other children and animals. Penelope’s carers will need lots of patience, warmth and availability to respond to her needs and ensure an ongoing relationship with her sisters. Penelope would benefit from being the youngest child or only child in the home, so that she can receive the support and attention she needs. Penelope’s carers would be part of a team, working in partnership with her case manager and clinical supports.
