Anglicare Sydney will build 550 affordable properties, delivered over three years, as one of the successful applicants for Phase 2 of the NSW Government’s Social and Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF).
“Anglicare Sydney is delighted to partner with the NSW Government in their initiative to increase housing supply and provide additional support for tenants,” says Grant Millard, CEO Anglicare Sydney.
Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward said the Social and Affordable Housing Fund proved what could be achieved when the Government worked with organisations like Anglicare to deliver great outcomes for vulnerable people.
“By embracing a collaborative approach, the Government and Anglicare are helping people to break the cycle of disadvantage and move towards greater independence,” Ms Goward says.
“I am delighted to welcome the second phase of this innovative program, which will ensure a pipeline of houses for vulnerable people for years to come.”
“This new venture builds on Anglicare’s long history of care, especially for people who are marginalised and vulnerable. We’ve been providing affordable rental accommodation for those in financial need for decades, but now we have the opportunity to assist even more people,” says Mr Millard.
“Along with accommodation, Anglicare is well placed to offer people tailored support, and access to services to improve their circumstances. We also want to create a safe environment where renters can foster meaningful connections with the wider community.”
Anglicare will be working with award winning architects to provide high quality dwellings in areas of high demand.
In 2018, Anglicare Sydney’s Rental Affordability Snapshot found that out of 18,000 properties advertised, less than 1% were available to people on low incomes without pushing the household into rental stress.
“Single women on low incomes are particularly vulnerable and the number of homeless, older women is increasing,” says Mr Millard
“A significant proportion of women who use our Food and Financial Assistance program experience rental stress or housing insecurity. We want to provide appropriate accommodation and a welcoming community for people facing disadvantage and social isolation in their later years.”
