Our commitment to child safety

Anglicare Sydney is committed to creating an environment where the safety, wellbeing, and participation of all children and young people is paramount. Consideration is especially given to vulnerable children; children with a disability; children from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds; and children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Anglicare Sydney has zero tolerance of child abuse. We treat all allegations and safety concerns seriously. We have a moral and legal obligation to contact authorities when concerned about a child’s safety.

Anglicare Sydney demonstrates a commitment to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people by:

• considering the views of children and young people regarding decisions that affect their lives
• empowering children and young people by taking their views seriously, and addressing any concerns they may have
• acknowledging the cultural diversity of families, and being sensitive to how this may impact on child safety
• taking proactive steps to prevent child abuse - identifying, reducing or removing risks early
• reporting suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment promptly to the appropriate authorities
• embedding Child Safe principles within our quality assurance practices.
• continuously reviewing and improving systems and practices to protect children and young people from abuse
• providing children and young people with the knowledge and skills to understand and maintain their own personal safety as appropriate or as required.

Anglicare Sydney supports staff and volunteers by:

• applying robust human resources and recruitment practices for all staff, volunteers and contractors
• providing training and education on child abuse risks
• implementing specific policies, procedures, training, and Code of Conduct to support the achievement of child safety
• listening to concerns raised about children’s safety and suggestions to improve existing child safety processes
• ensuring that every person working with Anglicare Sydney understands that the safety of children and young people is key to their decisions and activities.
