Anglicare is providing affordable housing in areas that need it most. The organisation will soon begin work on more affordable accommodation in Botany for people primarily over the age of 55.
“Anglicare has provided affordable accommodation to the community for decades. This new project builds on that long history of care to those who need safe, affordable housing options,” says Bill Farrand, Anglicare’s Chief Operating Officer.
The development application recently approved by Bayside Council is for 18 studio apartments at 1375-1377 Botany Road, with a retail space on the ground floor.
The new building, designed by award winning Architects Group GSA, will replace two rundown commercial spaces built in the 1970s that have been vacant for a number of years.
“Due to increases in the cost of housing in Sydney, the number of people in the area in need of affordable rental accommodation options has increased substantially over the last 10 years,” says Mr Farrand.
“Botany itself has experienced significant growth over the last five years. Currently 20% of households in the area are single person households. According to our research the median rental in Botany for a 1-bedroom unit is $520 per week. This places significant stress on single person household budget.
“Anglicare’s development in Botany will provide high quality affordable housing as well as support services for residents. We also want to create a safe environment where renters can foster meaningful connections with the wider community.”
The construction of the 4-storey building includes high level of amenity to the residents such as:
Construction of the building will commence in late-November 2019 and the estimated completion date is late 2020.
Anglicare has a particular focus on providing housing for women aged over 55 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women over 45, who need long-term, secure affordable housing.
Anglicare has been delivering services within the local area for many years and the significant investment of this development demonstrates Anglicare’s long-term commitment to supporting and enriching the local community.
