Anglicare is looking to provide affordable housing in areas that need it most. The organisation has commenced work on additional affordable accommodation in Nowra, with rental units available for people over the age of 55.
“Anglicare has provided affordable accommodation for people in financial need for decades. This new project builds on that long history of care for those who are marginalised and vulnerable,” says Bill Farrand, Anglicare’s Chief Operating Officer.
The development application recently lodged by Anglicare is for 24 one-bedroom units at 47 West Street Nowra. The building has been designed by award-winning Architects Group GSA.
“The number of people in Nowra in need of affordable rental accommodation options has increased substantially over the last 10 years, due to the substantial growth in the area and the cost of Sydney housing,” says Mr Farrand.
“There are over 3,000 individuals aged over 55 in the Nowra region, who have an individual weekly income of less than $500 per week, and more than 30% of these individuals are earning less than $300 per week. Most likely they need affordable housing.
“Anglicare’s development at Nowra will seek to provide high quality affordable housing as well as support services for residents. We also want to create a welcoming environment where residents can foster meaningful connections with the wider community.”
The Anglicare development has the full support of All Saints Anglican Church Nowra.
“We have a rich history of working together with Anglicare to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in the Nowra community and are excited to continue this partnership through the new development,” says Geoff Thompson, Senior Minister of All Saints Nowra.
“I am excited about this opportunity to share the love of God in practical ways. This development presents a great opportunity to provide safe, secure and affordable housing for those who need it most. I hope it enables the people who will live there to connect with the community in meaningful ways.”
The development will consist of one single storey and one 2-storey building which includes 24 high quality, low maintenance, one-bedroom units, with ample car parking for residents. The building will also contain a large communal pavilion conveniently located within landscaped garden. The communal area will include barbeque, outdoor seating, and a garden and is an attractive social space for all residents to enjoy.
The development particularly focuses on providing housing for women aged over 55 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women over 45, who need long-term, secure affordable housing. Anglicare has been delivering services within the greater local area for many years and is committed to supporting and enriching the local community.
