Anglicare low cost food van drives dollar further for low income families

Anglicare Sydney and the local Baulkham Hills Church have teamed up to provide low cost food for those in need in the community.

Stocked with household pantry items, Anglicare Sydney’s Mobile Community Pantry has been arriving at the corner of Cook St and Windsor Road, every fortnight to distribute food from 2.00pm to 3.00pm, since May this year. For a $10 contribution, eligible low income families will be able to take home a shopping bag full of food worth close to $60.

“Holy Trinity Church has supported Anglicare’s food collection for many years,” organiser John Facey explains.

“When the possibility to support the community by distributing affordable food was presented, we found it to be a natural extension of what we were doing and our Church family jumped at the opportunity to do more.”

For John, the aim of partnering with Anglicare’s Mobile Community Pantry is a modest, but important, one.

“We want to provide some tangible support, friendship and I guess a point of connection for people who desperately need this support,” says John.

“From our limited experience over the past two months, we have learned that vulnerability and disadvantage does not just manifest itself in ‘obvious poverty’. There is significant but well hidden social housing in the surrounding districts. We are regularly helping cash poor and lonely people, the elderly, the unemployed, single parents in desperate need and new immigrants, all struggling to survive in a sometimes apathetic society.

“There is a crying need for this kind of service in our community.”
