When Lego Builds More Than Just Houses

Care NewsNovember 12, 2025

Wouldn't it be simpler if we could build our homes out of Lego? No need for engineers or plaster, just a few clicks and bright colours. While we can't build real houses out of toys, they do build something important: joy. And joy is what makes a house feel like a home.

At Waitara Anglican Community Church, joy is being built brick by brick this Christmas. In celebration of their 75th anniversary, the congregation has set out to collect 75 boxes of toys and food through Anglicare's Toys 'n' Tucker program. The initiative has become a core part of their milestone year, reflecting their long history of faith, generosity, and community.

To help launch the appeal, Waitara's Cornerstone Fellowship, a midweek group of adult Lego enthusiasts, created a Lego Toys 'n' Tucker collection box, sparking a church-wide campaign with a "Lego home" theme. The group has already gathered 250 new Lego sets to share with children who might otherwise go without a gift this Christmas.

Long-time Anglicare supporter Belinda says, "As Christians, Christmas is a joyful time when we celebrate the birth of our Saviour. Toys 'n' Tucker gives us the chance to offer practical love to those in need."

For Waitara Anglican Community Church, it's not just about filling boxes. It's about building connection, hope, and the sense of home that every child deserves at Christmas.

Anglicare acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the original and ongoing custodians of the lands and waters on which we live and work.

Inspired by the gospel of reconciliation in Jesus Christ, Anglicare's vision for reconciliation is a nation in which Australia's First Peoples are restored in dignity, respect, empowerment and opportunity.
