What is it that makes a residential aged care home feel like home? Is it the room sizes and layout or is it the atmosphere and feeling you get when you step into a warm and welcome space, where everyone is treated with respect?

At Farrer Brown Court residential aged care in Castle Hill, there’s no better reference than the people who live and work here. Residents and staff describe it as “feeling like home”, one filled with genuine care, kindness, friendships and support.

Read on to discover life at Farrer Brown Court, where compassion, connection and community come together to create a home filled with love, laughter and faith.

A home in every sense

When you talk to people who live and work at Farrer Brown Court, the same sentiment comes through: it feels like home. Resident Don, who lives there with his wife Brenda, says the feeling comes from the relationships. “We look after each other here,” he says.

That spirit of love and care is felt the moment you arrive. “When you come in from the front door, you can see the vibrant, home-like environment, always a smiling face,” says registered nurse Sabita, who has worked at Farrer Brown Court for more than seven years.

Brenda says it’s the happy faces of the people who live and work at Farrer Brown Court that help new residents quickly settle in. “Once they see that everyone else is smiling and happy, and the staff are doing the same, they want to be part of it.”

Mary, who has lived at Farrer Brown Court for five years, says that for her, it’s the staff who truly make the place feel like home. “They are caring and become familiar with you and your life,” she says. “They treat you like part of the family.”

Even for the staff, being at Farrer Brown Court is like a “second home”. “When we come to work, we don’t feel like coming to work,” adds Sabita.

Where care and respect go hand in hand

Feeling at home also means knowing you’re cared for by people who treat you with respect. At Farrer Brown Court, the staff treat everyone with the same kindness, care and respect. And each interaction, no matter how small, is treated as a chance to bring comfort or connection.

“Talking with them every day, with a smile and a good morning makes their life so happy,” Sabita says. For her, those small but loving moments are what make her role at the home meaningful, and she now refers to the residents as her “family.”

Whether it’s helping someone settle in, supporting participation in an activity, or making space for quiet time, the care is genuine and respectful. As Brenda explains, “The staff really give us all their love when they’re at work. They’ve all got families, but their whole attention is for us. Whatever they can do for us, they do it.”

Sabita says creating a calm and happy environment helps everyone feel at ease. She believes that bringing positivity to work each day allows staff to give their best care and helps residents feel comfortable and supported.

Activities that bring people together

At Farrer Brown Court, there’s always something to look forward to. From live entertainment and art therapy to animal visits and exercise sessions, the days are filled with plenty of activities that bring people together.

Music plays a special role in the home. Mary is often found at the grand piano in the main lounge, playing old favourites that spark conversation and memories. “Playing the piano makes me feel useful and peaceful,” she says. “It [also] brings back memories for people, and they just love the old songs.” After she finishes, she likes to talk with residents who stop by to listen. “They tell me what the music has meant to them and the songs that brought back memories. We share a lot. That’s my gift,” she says.

Residents can choose to participate in art classes, trivia, or armchair travel to stay connected and social. Others find joy in the courtyard garden with friends. Each activity is an opportunity to connect, learn, or simply enjoy time with friends.

A variety of activities on offer means residents can keep their independence, while also staying connected and part of a loving community. “We still have freedom and we can choose what we want to do and go out with our families,” Mary says. “So we still have our independence.” It’s a balance that gives residents purpose and reassurance; the feeling of being supported but never limited.

Faith and support that nourish the spirit

Faith is an important part of life for many residents at Farrer Brown Court. The chapel, connected to the main lounge, is where people come together each week for church services, prayer, or a moment of reflection.

For Chaplain Osea, his role at the home extends beyond Sunday services; he also provides a steady spiritual presence. “We provide well-being and spiritual support for people, not just for Christians but for people of all backgrounds and religions,” he says.  Whether he’s visiting residents one-on-one, offering a prayer, or simply sitting with someone who needs company, his focus is on care that honours the whole person.

A place where you feel safe, valued, and at home

For residents at Farrer Brown Court, it’s not only the quality support or the beautiful spaces that make it feel like home, but the genuine relationships that form within them.

Residents say it’s the mix of kindness, familiarity, and freedom that helps them feel settled. “We love Farrer Brown because it is our home,” Don says. “Brenda and I ensure that everybody else sees it that way. We get them to realise that everything they want to do is here.”

For him, and for many others, Farrer Brown Court is a home in every sense of the word. “No,” he says with a smile, “I could not imagine being anywhere else.”
