Staying independent as we age is something many people value. In fact, the 2024 Residential Aged Care Insights Report found that seven in ten people hesitate about moving into residential aged care because they don’t want to lose their independence.

At Goodhew Gardens & Bay Breeze in Taren Point, residents are supported to maintain their independence through choice. They help shape the activities on offer, take on meaningful roles around the home, and spend plenty of time with new friends - whether that’s over coffee at the Sunshine Cafe, during a game of bingo or on a bus outing.

To get a glimpse of what the Goodhew Gardens & Bay Breeze community is like, it is best to hear from the people who live and work here. Their stories bring this community to life, and you can read them below.

A home where residents’ voices are respected

At Goodhew Gardens & Bay Breeze, residents find various ways to take part in the rhythms of each day.The Residents’ Activity Committee meets once a month, giving those who attend the chance to share ideas and talk through what they would like to do. Wayne, a resident, chairs the committee, he says around 20 people usually come along, and it’s a meaningful way for residents to feel heard.

Wayne is also part of Anglicare’s ResiAction initiative, where residents have the opportunity to take on roles around the home that bring purpose and connection. He loves his role of delivering the morning paper and weekly activity calendar. “The one thing I find fulfilling with the newspaper delivery of a morning is the interaction that I have with people… newspaper exchange for a bit of happiness and a smile,” he says.

Across all of Anglicare’s residential aged care homes, you’ll find residents involved in daily life as part of ResiAction  - whether that’s welcoming visitors at reception, setting tables for meals, tending to gardens or running the library. Faye, who has been part of the lifestyle team at Goodhew Gardens & Bay Breeze for more than ten years, says it’s these everyday roles that make life feel purposeful and connected for residents.

A place for connection and friendship

The Sunshine Café at Goodhew Gardens is a popular meeting place amongst residents, with pancake day a highlight for many. The regular Coffee Club also fills the cafe with chitchat most mornings. Wayne says it’s one of his favourite parts of the week, with up to 30 people gathering for scones, fruit shakes or just a chat.

The Cafe is also where sing-alongs, trivia and poem readings take place, turning it into a social community hub. “It all happens down here in the Sunshine Café. It's a great meeting place for practically everything… and a good way for residents to form friendships,” Faye explains. Families often join in too, which makes it easy to stay connected to loved ones.

But connection doesn’t stop at the café doors. Residents can join activities like the weekly men’s groups, play pool or snooker, or take part in regular outings. There are also activities that connect residents with the wider community, like knitting blankets that are donated to the RSPCA or helping out at the weekly market stalls.

George, a resident at Goodhew Gardens & Bay Breeze, has poured his energy into creating the home’s gardens. Working alongside his daughter Catherine and staff, he helped bring the space to life, and it’s now a beautiful place where residents can relax and connect. George was the first to get the gardens started, and since then, many others have enjoyed spending time in them.

An aged care home where families feel reassured

For many families, peace of mind matters as much as the care itself. Catherine says knowing her dad is supported makes all the difference. “Goodhew Gardens has given him so much dedication and care… I go home knowing that he is well looked after in every way.”

She describes how staff know her dad well, bringing out glasses of water when he works in the garden and helping with anything he needs. “I’ve got all the faith in the world that he’s in a wonderful place.”

Catherine says she would recommend Goodhew Gardens without hesitation. “From the care to the involvement in activities…  I [couldn’t] fault it at all. I would say go for it.”

Her words reflect what many families want most: the assurance that their loved one is safe, respected and supported every day.

Spaces that bring people together

Goodhew Gardens & Bay Breeze are designed to feel welcoming from the moment you walk in. Outside, the courtyards and gardens are used for morning teas, catching up with friends, or simply enjoying the beautiful sunshine. As Faye explains: “It’s the whole atmosphere, the way that Goodhew Gardens has been set up [...] there's plenty of space and room and ambience of the place that really feels welcoming.”

It is this warmth, both in the spaces and in the people, that helps residents and families feel truly at home.

A place to be involved, supported and connected

At Goodhew Gardens & Bay Breeze, residents play an active part in daily life. Committees, meaningful roles around the home, and time spent together in the café all keep people involved and connected. Families and residents say it’s the mix of genuine care and opportunities for connectionthat makes life at Goodhew Gardens & Bay Breeze truly feel like home.
