When families look for residential aged care, peace of mind is often one of the most important aspects; knowing their loved one is cared for, comfortable and supported by people they can trust. At Newmarch House in Kingswood, that peace of mind is deliveredby the teamwho work there. The staff are kind, attentive and genuinely care about the residents they support. Families describe a home that feels friendly and welcoming, where care is personalised and communication is always open. It’s this level of attention and support that helps residents feel comfortable, and families feel confident their loved ones are in good hands.
At Newmarch House, the heart of the home is the people who care for it every day. Residents, families and staff all talk about the same thing: a team who are kind, genuine and proud of what they do. At Newmarch House, the heart of the home is the people who care for it every day. Residents, families and staff all talk about the same thing: a team who are kind, genuine and proud of what they do. Many staff have worked at Newmarch House for years, creating the sense of trust and familiarity that helps residents feel settled and offers families peace of mind.
Care Supervisor Tracy Adkins says that culture starts with the team. “The care staff here are so compassionate and dedicated to the residents. I think that makes a huge difference.”
Residents and families certainly notice the kindness, the patience and the way staff treat everyone with respect. Resident Mary says, “The staff are lovely. Couldn't fault them.” Mary’s daughter, Brenda, says it's the warmth of the staff that makes the biggest impression. “They go way out of the way… they just make you feel so welcome,” she says.
While Julian, whose father Peter lives at the home, adds, “There's a good team environment. They're always willing to help each other out.” He adds how he appreciates how the staff will come and say hello to him whenever he comes to visit his father.
Explorers Café is the hub of this warm and welcoming home. It’s a place where residents, families and staff spend time together, catching up on the day and enjoying being part of the home’s everyday life.
“When they come for an experience at the café, I want it to be a lovely experience. We laugh and we chat. Sometimes someone might need a bit of comfort, and that’s fine too. We’re here for that,” explains Chris.
Residents often meet at the cafe before or after different activities going on in the home. Some come for tea and raisin toast, others for milkshakes or pancakes. “We keep it simple,” she says. “That way, everyone can enjoy it.”
Families love the cafe, too. Brenda says, “The minute I walked in and saw the coffee shop, I thought, ‘this is so nice’. I couldn’t have picked anything better.” When she visits her mother, Mary, they often sit together over coffee and talk to other residents or staff who stop by.
Step outside and you’ll find a courtyard or garden cared for by residents, families and staff together. These beautiful spaces are part of daily life and give residents the chance to stay active, social and connected to nature.
For Julian, the garden has become part of his father’s weekly routine. Every Wednesday morning, he arrives and takes his dad out for a drive. They often go to Bunnings to visit the nursery section to get ideas for plants. Peter, his father, brings along a small notebook to write down names and ideas for their next project in the garden back at Newmarch.
Julian says his dad takes pride in the space they’ve helped build. When they’re out there together, Peter points out what he’s planted and what he plans to do next. Watching him move around the garden, Julian says, reminds him of when he was young and his dad tended the vegetable patch at home.
Beyond the gardens, there’s a full calendar of activities that help residents stay connected and engaged. Residents can take part in exercise classes, trivia, concerts, art sessions and visits from entertainers. These activities help everyone stay involved while still giving residents the freedom to choose how they spend their day.
Families of residents at Newmarch House talk about how supported and informed they feel thanks to staff who stay in touch, check in often and make sure they’re included in what’s happening day to day.
“They keep you updated, says Brenda. “They’ll ring me on any little thing. Mum might just, for instance, have seen the doctor the night before or the day before that… She might not have felt like breakfast. But they let me know every little thing – doesn’t matter what it is.”
That consistency of communication helps Brenda relax. “If I've got something on and I've got to go out… I can go and not think, ‘I wonder how mum’s going today’. Because whatever happens, I just know I’ll get a quick phone call from the staff. And that’s what I like about it, because they keep you involved and let you know what's going on.”
Julian says he feels the same reassurance. “Just the feeling when you walk in here, the way the staff come across, they're always willing and eager to help,” he says. “They contact me all the time. Always keeping me well informed, which is what I like.”
Brenda says that the approach from the staff starts from the top. “[The manager] goes up and says hello to everybody. And he knows everyone's name. That makes mum feel special.”
Brenda says that the level of care provided gives her peace of mind, which is why she highly recommends Newmarch House. “I couldn't have picked anything better… it just had a lovely feeling when I came to this one. Very friendly. For anybody thinking about aged care, the first one on my list would be … and I’ve seen a few … the first one would definitely be, without a doubt, Newmarch House.”
