Belong at Anglicare

At Anglicare, belonging isn't just a value we hold - it's the foundation of everything we do. As a community of over 5,000 employees and 2,000 volunteers serving the greater Sydney and Illawarra regions, we believe that diversity strengthens our mission and enriches the lives of everyone we support.

Celebrating our multicultural community

Our team members and volunteers are as wonderfully diverse as the communities we serve. Collectively, we speak dozens of languages, allowing us to provide culturally appropriate support and overcome communication barriers that might otherwise prevent people from getting the help they need.

Our commitment extends beyond translation services to cultural competency, ensuring every person who walks through our doors feels understood, respected and valued for who they are.

Our reconciliation journey

Our reconciliation journey is beautifully captured in the artwork 'Our Journey, Spirit and Growth' by proud Kamilaroi artist, Rhonda Sampson, which depicts our commitment to walking alongside First Nations peoples through listening, learning, and truth-telling.

Inspired by the gospel of reconciliation in Jesus Christ, our vision for reconciliation is a nation in which Australia's First Peoples are restored in dignity, respect, empowerment and opportunity; where due honour and recognition is given to Australia's First Peoples; and where our organisation plays an ongoing role in healing and building positive relationships for all.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan builds on over a decade of commitment since 2014. It is based on four foundational pillars, connecting our past learnings, present actions, and future aspirations. Through our "Side by Side" strategic approach, we are committed to:

Relationships:

  • We acknowledge that we serve on the lands of the Tharawal, Walbunja, Darug, Eora, Gandangarra, Dharawal, Guringai, Wiadjuri, Kamilaroi, and Yuin nations, spanning Greater Sydney to the Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, New England Northwest and Norfolk Island.

  • We are committed to building trusted, respectful partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on these lands through comprehensive engagement plans and local community connections.

Respect:

  • We aim to respect cultural protocols by including Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country at significant events, displaying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at all facilities and celebrating milestone events like NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Week across all business units.
  • We are continually implementing new cultural protocols and providing cultural awareness training and other learning opportunities for all staff to ensure our services are culturally safe and empowering.

Opportunities:

  • We believe in creating economic opportunities that strengthen communities. Through our Supply Nation membership, we actively seek partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, removing barriers in our procurement processes and developing commercial relationships that provide mutual benefits.

  • Currently, we employ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff members in diverse roles, including Cultural Advisors, Care Staff, Chaplains, Program Managers, and our dedicated Reconciliation Action Manager who leads our strategic reconciliation direction. We remain committed to increasing our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and creating additional pathways for professional development.

Accessibility and inclusion

Every person deserves equal access to opportunities and support. We are committed to creating an environment where people of all abilities can thrive.

Our accessibility initiatives include:

  • Workplace accommodations and adaptive technologies

  • Anti-discrimination policies are regularly reviewed and strengthened through consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and advisors

Our ongoing commitment

Inclusion and belonging aren't destinations - they're ongoing journeys that require continuous learning, listening and growth.

Led by our CEO and Executive Committee, with guidance from our RAP Working Group and dedicated Reconciliation Action Manager, we regularly review our practices, seek feedback from our communities, and adapt our approaches to ensure we're creating the most inclusive environment possible.

We measure our progress through quarterly reporting, annual impact surveys, and transparent public reporting of our achievements, challenges and learnings. Our RAP Champions help raise the profile of reconciliation across our organisation, ensuring that cultural awareness and inclusion are embedded in everything we do.

Through the initiatives listed above, we're not just building a more inclusive workplace. We're modelling the kind of community we want to see in the world. A community where everyone belongs, everyone is valued, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Join an organisation where inclusion isn’t just a policy - it’s a way of life

Know you can. Believe we will.

Anglicare acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the original and ongoing custodians of the lands and waters on which we live and work.

Inspired by the gospel of reconciliation in Jesus Christ, Anglicare's vision for reconciliation is a nation in which Australia's First Peoples are restored in dignity, respect, empowerment and opportunity.
