Foster Care Application Process

Prospective foster carer preparing application documents at home.

Becoming a foster carer is a significant decision, but you don't need to start with all the answers. With a safe home, an open mind, and a desire to care, you're already on your way. Anglicare provides a structured, supportive application process that helps you understand each step and feel confident as you move forward.

Step-by-step application process

Becoming a foster carer doesn't happen all at once, and you're never expected to navigate it alone. This step-by-step process breaks the journey into manageable stages, each supported by Anglicare's experienced team.

Step 1 - Start the conversation

Your journey starts by submitting an enquiry or contacting Anglicare's Foster Care Team. This first step is a friendly, no-obligation conversation where you can ask questions, explore what foster care involves, and learn about the different care options. Our team will guide you through what comes next at a pace that feels comfortable.

Step 2 - Training

Before applying, you'll complete Anglicare's Prepare to Care training, which includes self-paced online modules and a one-day face-to-face workshop at our Telopea training rooms or delivered regionally by appointment. You'll learn about children's needs, gain practical tools, connect with prospective carers, and hear from current carers sharing their experiences.

Step 3 - Submit your application

The next step is completing your formal application to become a foster carer. This involves providing identification, Working With Children Checks, personal references, and information about your household. Our team is ready to support you at every stage, offering clear guidance and practical help whenever you need it.

Step 4 - Assessment & home visits

Your assessment is a collaborative process that builds a complete picture of what fostering could look like in your home. You'll meet with one of our trained assessors for home visits and reflective conversations about your routines, experiences, and strengths. The process is respectful and transparent, ensuring you feel informed, prepared, and well supported.

Step 5 - Welcome a child or young person into your home

Once you are authorised as a foster carer, we take great care in considering which child or young person may be most suitable for your home and family. This stage is approached thoughtfully with the aim to create the best possible beginning for both you and the child, with safety, stability, and mutual wellbeing at the centre.

Connecting with other foster carers

Community makes all the difference. Anglicare provides opportunities to connect with other carers through events, support groups, and local networks. Many carers tell us that hearing from others, sharing stories, and learning together is one of the most valuable parts of their journey. These connections help build confidence, reduce isolation, and create a strong foundation of shared wisdom and support.
