Port Kembla social housing development officially open

Anglicare Sydney is delighted to officially open its latest social housing development at the former Steelworks Hotel site in Port Kembla.

Anglicare CEO, Simon Miller, said: “This is a very important project for the community, and we are delighted to officially open the Port Kembla development which will provide a safe, secure and life-enriching home to members of the local community.

The development comprises 30 studio apartments to be home to social housing residents aged 55 and over. Built with Growthbuilt, the apartments include contemporary design, with community and social spaces, with the historic façade preserved.

The $10 million development has been 50-50 funded by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice’s Community Housing Innovation Fund (CHIF) and Anglicare Sydney’s own fundraising and resources.

“Older Australians, and women in particular, are at higher risk of homelessness, and projects like these are a lifeline to those in need, particularly at a time of significant cost-of-living pressure and worsening housing affordability.

“We look forward to warmly welcoming residents in the coming days and weeks, as they settle in and make this their home.

“Projects like this offer a beacon of hope for many, and we want to do more.

“We thank the NSW Government for their partnership in this project and encourage both State and Federal Government to increase their commitment to social and affordable housing projects to help more older Australians at risk of homelessness,” said Mr Miller.

Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully MP, said that the revitalised Steelworks Hotel provides additional housing options for a vulnerable group in the community.

“It is important that we look at all options to improve housing outcomes, particularly for people who find it difficult to access market housing. It is an important addition to Port Kembla.

“I am pleased that this redevelopment has been able to marry good housing and social outcomes while maintaining a recognisable and historic Port Kembla building façade,” he said.
