How residents maintain their city lifestyle at residential aged care Rushcutters Bay

Residential Aged CareDecember 4, 2025By Residential Care 4 minute read

A concern that some people have about moving into residential aged care is that they risk losing the community and lifestyle they’ve always known. At Elizabeth Lodge in Rushcutters Bay, staying connected is part of everyday life. With cafés, shops, the harbour and leafy parks just moments away, residents can continue enjoying the places, routines and relationships that have long been part of their city life. Here, moving into residential aged care doesn’t mean giving anything up — it simply means having the support you need while remaining part of the community you love.

A location like no other

Few residential aged care homes can claim a location quite like Elizabeth Lodge. Its central location means residents can easily enjoy a harbour-side picnic or head into the city to visit a favourite museum. Many start their day with a walk to the local café or by relaxing in the courtyard with a morning coffee, greeting dog walkers and chatting with neighbours as they pass. Later in the day, you might find them exploring the historic surrounding streets or joining one of the regular bus trips to galleries, beaches or the expansive grounds of Centennial Park.

Anne, a resident at Elizabeth Lodge, says the setting is one of the many reasons she enjoys living here. “Above all is location,” she says. “I can walk outside, go up to the shops or down to the park to see people with their dogs.” She values being able to join the neighbourhood community whenever she wants. “I just like the fact that you can get out into a more general community,” she says. “It’s very important.”

Lifestyle Coordinator Nelly agrees that the surroundings are beautiful and shape much of life at the home. “The bus trips are amazing in this location because we’re close to the galleries, the beaches and all the parks, [including] Centennial Park,” she says.

Many of the residents find comfort knowing that the city life that they know and love – is right outside the door. The location gives residents the freedom to stay connected to the world around them, while still feeling entirely at home.

Freedom to live life your way

Independence and freedom are something residents appreciate about living at Elizabeth Lodge. It’s a residential aged care home where you can still live life on your own terms, with the support you need close by. Ruth says it’s one of the things she values most. “The thing I enjoy most is that I can... go up the road for a walk. I can go out and about by myself. I’ve still got my own independence.”

That freedom is encouraged from the moment people move in. Staff make it easy for residents to keep doing the things they’ve always loved, whether that’s walking to the shops, meeting friends for coffee, or joining one of the regular outings. As Emily, the Residential Manager of Elizabeth Lodge, explains, “We encourage everyone to go out and walk up and down the community. It’s really lovely that they have that independence.”

For Anne, it’s not just about having her independence, but the peace of mind it gives her family. “My family is so happy to see me happy,” she says. It’s the balance of safety, independence and trust that defines life at Elizabeth Lodge. Residents have the freedom to live life the way they are used to, with the added comfort of knowing there’s always someone nearby to help if needed.

Caring staff who help you feel at home

The care residents receive at Elizabeth Lodge begins with understanding the person first. When a new resident moves in, they are welcomed by the staff who take the time to understand their unique life story. This is just one way that Anglicare’s model for person-centred care, Rhythm of Life is implemented in the home. They align their care and support to each resident's individual needs and preferences. Nelly explains how moving into residential aged care can be an adjustment for many, so the staff do their best to help them settle in. “We make them feel like they are home, and that they’re not alone,” she says.

One way the staff do this is by regularly talking with residents and their families about what they enjoy, so the activities and support always reflect their personal choices. “We always plan with them and plan with their families so we can support them in the things that they really want,” says Nelly.

Emily says the team’s role is to support residents’ independence, not limit it. “We really empower residents to make their own decisions and support them. We encourage them to make those choices and make it safe for them to do so.”

Ruth says she finds the staff “marvellous” and “obliging” – always willing to help whenever needed.

The lifestyle calendar keeps the days interesting

There’s always something happening at Elizabeth Lodge, with each week bringing a mix of favourites and new ideas, like painting sessions, art classes, happy hour, bus trips and picnics. Mornings may start with exercise or coffee with friends, while afternoons might bring music, games or a visit from the local community.

The program changes frequently, led by what residents enjoy most, whether that’s outings around the city or time together in the lounge. Staff do their best to make sure each resident can join in at their own pace, supporting those who want to stay busy and those who prefer quieter days.

Life at Elizabeth Lodge is both social and relaxed, so no matter how you like to spend your day, your preferences will be respected.

A beautiful place to call home

Elizabeth Lodge is a beautiful place to call home, not only for its location and features, but for its strong sense of community, which Emily describes as “a wholesome environment”.

Ruth says she feels fortunate to be part of it: “I think we’re very, very lucky to live here,” she says. “Community is important, and I find the community in this building,  is the most important thing you can have.”

Her words capture what many residents describe: a place where you can live with comfort and joy, close to the city but surrounded by care, independence and friends. As she puts it: “Elizabeth Lodge is my happy place.”
