Anglicare English lesson resources
Anglicare regularly publishes and updates English teaching material and Bible teaching aids.
These resources are written specifically for teaching English in a church context for ministry. You can obtain any of these resources free of charge. Please bookmark this page so it can be easily accessed in the future.
English Foundations
At the English Foundations level, students:
- may be able to understand a few spoken English words but not familiar with the English alphabet
- may have a very small bank of words and/or formulaic phrases e.g. "hello" and "goodbye"
- may be able to answer very basic questions about themselves e.g. "What's your name?" and "Where are you from?"
- are able to speak fluently in their mother language but may not be able to read or write in it or any other language
Level 1 - Beginner
At the Beginner level, students:
- may understand some basic phrases but have little functional spoken or written English
- may have a very small bank of words and/or formulaic phrases e.g. "hello" and "goodbye"
- may be able to answer very basic questions about themselves e.g. "What's your name?" and "Where are you from?"
- may be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly
Level 2 - High Beginner
At the High Beginner level, students:
- can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic everyday phrases
- can introduce themselves and others
- can ask and answer questions about personal details e.g. where they live, people they know and things they have
- have basic vocabulary and with support, can discuss common topics e.g. weather, colours, days of the week, work, family, clothing
Level 2 to 3
These resources are appropriate for all students between High Beginner and Intermediate

Level 2 to 4
These resources are appropriate for all students between High Beginner - High Intermediate
Level 3 - Intermediate
At the Intermediate level, students:
- can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information
- can describe in basic terms aspects of their background, environment and personal needs
- can understand the main points of text on familiar topics regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc
- regularly speak in full short sentences, not just single words or formulaic phrases
- may make mistakes that hinder understanding when trying to create longer sentences

Level 3 to 4
These resources are appropriate for all students between Intermediate - High Intermediate

Ten English listening units based on personal stories from around the world
Level 4 - High Intermediate
At the High Intermediate level, students:
- can negotiate most situations likely to arise in everyday tasks e.g. shopping and travelling
- can speak in more complex sentences on topics which are familiar or of personal interest
- are beginning to navigate more complex tasks independently e.g. renting a flat, gym membership, going to the doctor
- with support can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions
- with support can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans
