Adoption

Adoption is a permanent legal process which transfers parental responsibility from a child’s birth parents to their adoptive parents.

Anglicare Sydney provides adoption services and support to children, birth families and prospective adoptive parents considering adoption.

Adoption programs

When you adopt a child through Anglicare Sydney, there are three different programs open to you: local adoption, special needs adoption and adoption from foster care.
Local adoption
This program supports birth parents in NSW who make the difficult decision to place a child for adoption. Anglicare embraces open adoption practices ensuring that any child you adopt remains in regular touch with their birth family and grows up knowing they are adopted. Anglicare has been providing local adoption services since 1958.
Special needs adoption
Some children placed for adoption have a high level of care needs. To adopt a child with special needs, you must be able to demonstrate your experience in providing a high level of care for children with special needs as well as prove your capacity to keep doing so.
Adoption from foster care
If you would like to provide long term foster care for a child, you may wish to consider fostering to adopt where adoption is in the best interest of the child.

As an accredited adoption service, Anglicare can process the adoption of children from long term foster care, authorising you as both an adoptive parent and a foster carer. This is called “dual authorisation” and it can make the process of finalising your child’s adoption in court far more streamlined.

Anglicare is committed to placing each child in the family who can best meet their needs. Anglicare is not accredited to support the adoption of a child from overseas (intercountry adoption) or a child who is a member of your family (intrafamily adoption), such as a stepchild. For these adoption services, please contact Communities and Justice adoption services.
