Katie has been accessing support from Anglicare over the last 4 years. First being referred to our service after a hospital admission Katie was able to work out a wellness plan to help her maintain her well being in the community. Katie was taking positive steps to better herself but unfortunately due to every day stressors she had a relapse and found herself in a very dark place, debating suicide.
It was at this time that she called her support worker at Anglicare. This life changing call allowed us to attend Katie’s unit, provide her with emotional support, and get her the assistance she needed in hospital.
A few months later Katie decided she would like to study mental health at TAFE which was going to be no easy task. With the help of Anglicare Katie was able to successfully complete her study and student placement all while learning more about her own mental health. Katie has described Anglicare’s support as “life changing” and hopes to one day be able to support others in the community the way Anglicare workers do.
As Katie continued to learn more about herself and her own health & wellness she found physical activity to be a key factor in her recovery. Katie signed up for an Anglicare Waves of Wellness group which allowed her to learn to surf and learn about wellness all at once. While Katie didn’t stand up on a surfboard she attended every week and loved getting outside. She explained the group as the “highlight of her life”.
Katie’s ability to persist through adversity and overcome a number of barriers in life were highlighted by Anglicare staff and allowed Katie to see how resilient she is. Katie has now received an NDIS package with the support of Anglicare and insists that she only wants to access support from Anglicare based on years and years of positive experiences with the organisation and its staff.
